It shows its age in some places, but there's so much to be in love with here. eccentricity, magicka, and womanhood ad infinitum.

"People under seventy and over seven are very unreliable if they are not cats."

TW/CW: fatphobia, body-shaming, homophobia, dead-naming, a bit of racism

I hate the fatphobia--and love the Goddess Spirituality, eccentricies, and humor. This is not a conventional novel, and since the author, Leonora Carrington, was a Surrealist artist, I didn't expect it to be conventional.

There’s a chunk of text in the middle which drags the plot to a crawl. Marian literally reads a text about a winking nun in a painting… it doesn’t add anything to the story, but everything else is kookie and charming! Loved this book!

I adored the first 40% which is quirky, absurd, funny. Then there's a massive detour that I just couldn't wrap my head around. Surreal and strange and completely off the rails. We get back on the rails at about the 65% mark and it's back to being entertaining and intriguing and I was hoping it would stay that way. It did until we derail again at 90% and the whole last section has me scratching my head.
If you do like surrealist experimental stuff, you may love this! Heads up for some transphobic, racist, and fatphobic comments.
