A lovely picture book about a granddaughter and her grandfather who spend time together at the beach and wait for the ocean tide, which is used a metaphor to represent her grandfather's memories ("sometimes they are near and full of life, and other times they are distant and quiet"). Although frustrating at times, she thinks about how she also forgets things sometimes, and this helps her to better understand her grandfather and his dementia.
This book reminded me of my interactions with my grandfather and his struggle with dementia. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to introduce or discuss dementia with their child. It approaches the subject delicately, without ever using the word 'dementia'.
