Looking back it seems so obvious who it was....but it was a great ride and I definitely recommend reading it.

I enjoyed this book SO much more than I expected to! Lately, all of the mysteries and thrillers I've read have started to blur into one, and nothing really stood out until Everything You Want Me to Be came along. This one is likely to end up on my Top 10 of 2017 list.

Hattie Hoffman is a brilliant actress, capable of convincing you that she's anything and everything you want her to be. She is a small town darling who captures everyone's heart, so who's to blame when she is shockingly found brutally murdered in an abandoned barn? From the beginning, the suspect list is short, so there are no shocking twists in discovering the identity of the murderer, but what you learn along the way about Hattie and her relationships is unexpected and compelling.

This novel is full of perfectly imperfect characters and forbidden relationships that should leave readers cringing, but instead, we find ourselves cheering them on despite all of their flaws and misgivings. Told from 3 rotating POVs, this story unfolds perfectly (though a bit slow-paced), and we discover hidden layers to each character as each new bit of information is revealed.

audiobook review

I thought this was an enjoyable thriller and think it benefitted from the multiple perspectives and timelines. Hattie is a teen from a small town who has big dreams. Del is a detective working to solve Hattie's murder. Peter is Hattie's English teacher.

This book kept me engaged with the complex relationships. Are the obvious suspects to blame, or is it more complicated? I couldn't help but wonder if I would have liked the ending more had the last few chapters been cut.

I was hesitant to listen to this one since the sample sounded robotic. I got used to it pretty quickly and am ultimately glad I chose this format due to the longer chapters. I'm always happy to find books from my TBR on Hoopla!

Rating: I liked it! (3.5)

The subject matter is beyond unsettling, but this book is so good. It gripped my by the throat from the first page, and I thought the portrayal of all the characters was so convincing. It was an amazing and disturbing meditation on the havoc that can be wrought when humans give in to their baser impulses.
