I’ve always loved Jaqueline Woodsen. I was first introduced to her in one of my college classes, and I was intrigued by how beautiful her stories are, as well as how detailed and complex her characters are. This book was no exception. I loved it. There were so many times where I paused at certain lines and just said, “wow” to myself.

This story tackles so many big topics: teenage pregnancy, poverty, inequality, race, sexuality, and growing up. I took on these topics gracefully and painted a beautiful portrait of the human struggle.
I HIGHLY recommend this book.

This novel packs so much power into 200 spare pages. The white space is as intentional as each word chosen, and it almost reads like a novel in verse. Iris and Aubrey, Melody, Sabe and Po’Boy, CathyMarie... parents and children, lovers and spouses, pain and forgiveness.... Red at the Bone is just so darned full of history and heart. Jacqueline Woodson has outdone herself.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the electronic ARC.

There is something so powerful about an impactful short book. When I attempt to dive into “literary fiction”, I get nervous and usually talk myself out of reading them. However, this is SO worth the read.

Families, history, love, sex, expectations, dreams, fear, and so much more play into who we are. That’s what this story uncovers. I urge anyone and everyone to dive into the brilliance and the sadness found in the pages of this book.

It took me a while to get into, but once I did I enjoyed the book.
