Pretty darn good. There were a couple of spreads where I wasn't quite sure what was happening (or who it was happening to), but it's a good story and great drawing!

The sepia flashbacks made it hard for me to tell the difference between the main male and female characters- they looked a little too similar without the difference in hair color. I thought Gramma was both of their grandmother at one point.

I think the dark color scheme made some of the details get lost, and it seems like a story fit for middle grade readers, but the plot was unclear, and the female characters seem a little too voluptuous. Maybe it's not their fault, a la Jessica Rabbit.

An interesting graphic novel about 2 teens from 2 different villages defeating the evil that is keeping Broxo trapped.

Zora is a princess from a foreign land who wants to unite all the clans in the land. Broxo is the last of his clan, well except for the rest of his clan who are now walking dead.

I overall enjoyed the book, but I found, at times, to be confused and also wondering why certain choices were made. I actually think the book would have been better without the zombie part and focused just on the other evils on the mountain. Although, the zombies did make this book quite unique.

I will probably get this for my classroom and see how it goes over- I think fans of Bone will enjoy it.

Great art (I am a sucker for it). Light story, feels like the first effort of a future amazing storyteller.

Professional review:
In a fantasy world filled with unfamiliar animals and zombies, a girl is looking for a lost tribe. She soon meets a boy who claims to be a king. These two characters then find themselves bound together in a quest to save a cursed people. Giallongo is a strong new voice in graphic novels. His illustrations are lushly colored and filled with unique creatures and beautiful landscapes. With a sensibility reminiscent of Doug TenNapel, Giallongo creates a whole new world which begs the reader to examine every panel. Each chapter begins with a stunning full-spread illustration, and the figures are expressively drawn with clean lines and a unique accessibility. Readers will wish they had an animal like the one named Zora in their own lives. Unfortunately, though the characters, the world, and the illustrations are strong, the storytelling leaves something to be desired. The introduction to this unfamiliar world is muddy and vague, leaving the reader distracted by their own confusion about what exactly is going on. Although there are elements of brilliance here, the coalescence is immature. This is still a strong offering and a worthy purchase, but hold out on large numbers until Giallongo’s next venture.

What else:
I remember being very disappointed that this didn't knock it out of the park for me. It was way too gorey/sexy for elementary schoolers, and maybe sketch for middle schoolers too. But that's disappointment on a curve, based on my high expectations/hopes.
Also, I'm a world-building appeal person, which means that if I'm uncertain of my time/place/setting, it's unsettling and distracting in a way that may not be a thing for people more interested in character, plot or language. Take lots of salt here.

An apocalyptic fantasy about a young boy, the last of his clan, and the mysterious end of his people. This one was darker than I expected, but in a good way.

I liked this well enough. Nothing too fancy here, but a fun story about death and undead zombies, ghosts and stuff.
