I made it to 1.5 stories, before I decided I didn't want to torture myself any more. The first story was nice, but the way it was written was a bit grating. The second story felt even more grating. The last two stories seem to be the best of the bunch, but I can't be bothered to give them a try.

Soman Chainani and Gayle Forman's stories were the stand outs for me! I loved the twist on these classic fairy tales. I did not enjoy Nic Stone's story, I feel it was totally out of place in this collection. Several trigger warnings for it and it was much more adult of a story than even The Cleaners by Ken Liu, which is about actual adults. The Cleaners was a solid 3 stars for me. And Rainbow Rowell's story was just blah. No feelings raised for it at all. The Princes by Soman Chainani kept me riveted and I couldn't walk away!

I have read all of the Faraway collection. While I am not a fan of fantasy or sci-fi, I have enjoyed this collection of short stories.

This is part of the Amazon Faraway Series, fairy tales retold with twists! I really enjoyed most of these and loved hearing stories told in a complete different way from the originals.

The Prince and the Troll - 5 Stars - Very topical for our modern times
Hazel and Gray - 4 Stars - A modern day Hansel and Gretel
The Princess Game - 5 Stars - So clever, even in the way the characters were named! Dark and not a typical fairytale at all but instead flips the narrative to show you a whole different kind of Disney Princes.
The Cleaners - 3 Stars - Probably the one I enjoyed the least.
The Wickeds - 5 Stars - My favorite of the bunch!! Story about the evil stepmothers made infamous by Disney told from their point of view. In the end, truly a story about mothers and daughters.

A short collection of modernized fairy tale-esque stories that aims to be charming, it's not exactly impressive.

Verdict:
Either that, or my expectations were too high. Nonetheless, Ken Liu's [b:The Cleaners|55817043|The Cleaners (Faraway Collection)|Ken Liu|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1604005747l/55817043._SX50_.jpg|87027583] is a clear winner, definitely a personal favorite.

Quite interesting. These short stories were NOT AT ALL what I expected. My favorite by far had to Hazel & Grey followed by The Princess Game.

If you've got some time and are ready to be surprised, do yourself a favor and read these :)

The Cleaners & Hazel and Gray were the only stories I thought were "okay", the rest were not worth the time. Very disappointing, but at least it was free.

Half of this is new fairy tales and half is reworked ones and I think it would be a stronger collection if it were one or the other, but I adore Ken Liu's short stories and I cannot fault any collection with one too much. Though the fact that one had a full cast but didn't take the small step to also have sound design is infuriating.
