Compelling writing. The 1981 Houston setting was believable and evocative of that time. I have lived most of my life in Houston and enjoyed all the familiar references. This is my first Attica Locke novel but I look forward to reading more of her work.

I love that this book was like a mystery and historical fiction on the Black Power Movement and unions all in one. I like the way Locke writes Black male detectives

This book had a lot going on. Very tense and thrilling, especially at the beginning, it started to drag towards the end and the twists became more predictable. I appreciated the background on Jay's youth and how it intertwined with radical movements in the 60s. However, Lock  didn't quite stick the landing with the many plot lines. I think the whole union piece could have been cut or else brought to a more interesting and connected resolution.

Great look at how the radicalism of the 60s was viewed by the establishment.
