Psychologically twisted experimental Japanese comics. I can see how Tatsumi’s method of storytelling would have been influential and even revolutionary when they first appeared in the ’70s, but that doesn’t make the stories themselves any less unpleasant or misogynistic. I did not enjoy them.

This is actually a brilliant comic, and as the name implies, it is disturbingly dark and depressing. There are several separate stories within it that magnify the same ideas through character and circumstance.

It's reductive and not fair to call this Manga Will Wisner but on the other hand...

The art in the series is gorgeous as a uniformly plain protagonist inhabits various sad lives in the bottom rung of post war Japan. A short read and an interesting one for sure.
