After starting this book and reading approximately 50% I found it was moving along too slowly. In the hopes of carrying on with the story I switched to the audible version and I was definitely glad I did.
The main character, Sugar, is beautifully flawed and direct but her outspoken nature loveable and funny at times.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel once switching to the audio version.
Would recommend.

This really floored me. The writing is so tender in its depiction of womanhood, loss, friendship, and family in the face of pretty horrific circumstances. You're enveloped in the South of another era. McFadden really takes you there: to Arkansas, to Pearl, to Sugar and beyond. Excellent storytelling, unabashedly Black, Southern and grown. Can't wait to read part 2.

this book has changed me.
beautiful.
complex.
real.
every woman needs a bit of sugar and a bit of pearl.
a tale of friendship, family, and the tragedy that bond the two.
a must read.
A MUST READ.
