Wow. First of all: don't read this book until you have some idea of who, exactly, "A" might be. Otherwise, the rest of the PLL books just aren't going to be the same.

Next. First off, Shepard does a great job not painting characters in black and white. Is it Ali or Courtney that is evil? Is it both? Are they really two separate people?

Finally. Shepard is just fantastic, in this book in particular, at capturing the nuances of teen female relationships (and really, some of that carries over into adulthood as well). You wonder why the girls stay friends with Ali, when she's obviously manipulative, conniving and desperate for attention, but then you see Ali do something sweet or gentle or kind and you get it. And you remember back to your own junior high or high school days and similar friendships come to mind.

Reading this makes me pitied Courtney, she seems more human haha and she's just another victim of Alison.

I refuse to believe that a 7 year old could be that manipulative and terrible

I'm curious about what happened to Nick. He doesn't appear in the later books but I have a feeling he just might...
I think that the accomplice is either Iris or Nick but if it was Nick I'd be really confused because he doesn't really have a reason to kill "Ali" apart from the fact that he caught her kissing someone else. Is that really enough to aide someone in murder?
Iris makes a lot more sense because she is crazy. But I doubt Iris will be A's helper because Iris was suspected as A once before. I realised that whenever the girls suspect that someone is A they turn out NOT to be A at all. So maybe when Hanna thought it was Iris, the author was actually cancelling her out as A, if that makes sense?

I don't know if it was because it was an ebook, I just could not get into this book. I feel that you get some insight into the Ali and Courtney but not enough to really have me get into this book. Waiting for Pretty Little Secrets before I start the 3rd arch.

Spoilers below

I loved being in Ali's head! Their Ali not real Ali but still.
I'm so glad that we find out that real Ali made Courtney pretend to be like her.
I just wish Ali gave Courtney that chance before she killed her.

You can see that Ali really does care about her friends, but she is always fighting for something.

And Nick. Wow. I didn't think that Sara would fit him into this book. I think nick actually did fall for their Ali but was still loyal to real Ali.

Overall a very enjoyable book! It helps me understand why certain characters did what they did. - June 2015
