Magical realism meets the prison system makes for a beautiful, haunting, and deeply sad read. Though somehow there’s hope too, maybe?

While it’s not graphic in the traditional sense, take care and make sure to check the content warnings to get a sense of things.

Mariah (@layoversandliterature) described this book as being "quiet, tender yet dark, and beautifully written" and I couldn't agree more. The Enchanted is told from the perspective of a death row inmate who mysteriously sees beyond the confines of his underground cell and "the lady" who is a death penalty investigator. Through them, Denfeld tells a haunting story with elements of magical realism that somehow intensifies the grimness. I can honestly say that I've never read anything quite like this and I definitely recommend it to those who like dark, emotional, and atmospheric reads.
