A very well researched book regarding the still unsolved murders of many women in New York. The telling was very detailed which is both good and bad as the tended to lose interest for sections.

This may have been a five-star rating if I'd discovered the section outlining the cast of characters and who was connected to who earlier...but due to the fact that three of the girls' names are quite similar, as are many of the secondary characters, and often details weren't included when the author swung back to certain girls' stories, I'll give it 4.5 stars.

I thought this book did well at painting a portrait of what happens -- or more accurately, doesn't happen -- when women in the sex trade disappear. I also enjoyed that it spent plenty of time on the women's backstories, and that it rarely seemed judgemental when painting portraits of their lives.

I recommend watching "Killing Season" after reading this book. I thought it would be simply a repeat of information, but the book pays far more attention to the individuals involved, while the docu-series expands and goes further into other cases of vulnerable young women who have gone missing.

“The Lost Girls” is true crime at its best: empathetic, victim-centric, and unafraid to ask hard questions. Granted, at the time of publication the Long Island Serial Killer had not been identified - but this was never going to be a book about the killer. Instead, the author takes time exploring the multitudes contained within each of the victims and her family. It’s about sex work, and an isolated coastal community, and society’s failure to see the personhood of all victims. What a good read which finally got me out of my reading slump!

I had loads of questions left unanswered about the Long Island Serial Killings after watching a recent documentary. Naturally this book is much more in depth and offered yet another frank and fascinating look at the cases. Recommend!!
