Amazing story of the people/culture and the Appalachian Mtns. I enjoyed how Jennia Beth/Jen Gibbs has a paradigm shift about embracing God's hand in her life and making a bridges between the past and the present in a healing way. I also related to Rand's revelation about faith. I think these themes were dealt with well. They were intertwined in a story that I did not want to put down. I highly recommend this book.

This book was wonderfully written. Lisa does an amazing job of weaving together generations of history and keeping you waiting with baited breath. I will definitely be coming back to this book as a reread.

Another great story by Wingate. Historical fiction, family conflict, mystery, and romance all packed into one book.

We Southerners love a good story. Storytelling is so woven into our culture that it cannot be separated. I enjoyed the interwoven stories of a woman attempting to escape her past in the mountains and a girl trying to find her future in those same mountains years before. The story isn’t complex but I did find it interesting.

Master storyteller, Lisa Wingate returns with the continuation of her inspiring series with THE STORY KEEPER, (#2 Carolinas), as New York editor, Jen Gibbs uncovers a mysterious manuscript over twenty years old written by an unknown author, leading her back to the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC, a place she thought she would never return.

Having read all the books in the series, set in North Carolina, from east to west, Wingate crafts a compelling read—a spellbinding story of generations, combining the past and present of two different stories, for questions answered with comfort and hope, a journey, an experience, the glory hours!

Jen Gibbs is getting on with her life, with her nice job as an editor for a New York publishing house, after overcoming her dysfunctional family.

When a manuscript over twenty years old turns up with no author, she is intrigued. She becomes immersed in the story of Sarra, a mixed-race Melungeon girl trapped in the dangerous turn-of-the-century Appalachia.

From time travel to undeniable pain, despair, prejudice and bigotry, love, sisters, family, and acceptance.

(Melungeon is a term traditionally applied to one of numerous "tri-racial isolate" groups of the Southeastern US. Historically, Melungeons were associated with the Cumberland Gap area of central Appalachia, which includes portions of East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and eastern Kentucky).

There are two stories, both which will grab you from Sarra’s story and Jen’s. What makes it very dramatic is Jen’s history as for how she relates to the past. However, she never dreamed she would be drawn to the man, Evan who wrote the novel or return to the area she spent years escaping. A secret place which holds many treasures, of beauty and tragedy.

A heartbreaking and emotional story of contemporary and historical fiction genres combined. Fans of Sarah Jio, Diane Chamberlain, Patti Callahan Henry, Karen White, and Mary Alice Monroe will enjoy the dual storyline of past and present.

As a native of NC, there is much beauty in the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains (Western Carolina area, my favorite)--from the scenic highways, the waterfalls, hiking, history, and the mountains, especially in the fall—nothing better than a log cabin overlooking a stream, a rocking chair, a tin roof, a cup of coffee or tea, a quilt, the rain, and a great book!

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator, Abby Craden did a good job with the poverty-stricken, and country southern dialect. The Story Keeper can be read as a standalone; however, I would recommend reading the entire series, beautiful and powerful! "The thing which underlines the best stories – HOPE!"

Story about a young book editor who was raised in the Appalachian Mountains coming to terms with her past. Included a side story/manuscript about a Melungeon girl at the turn of the 20th century.

The Story Keeper by Lisa Wingate
Have read some of the author's other works and enjoyed the book. This one intrigued me to want to read it. It's about Jen Gibbs who is a book editor and we get to see just what it is she does on a daily basis.
Always wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes. She's recently broken up with her boyfriend Brian and she keeps the dog, Friday. She is so by herself that she carries on conversations with him. She had a manuscript put on her desk, unsolicited and she realizes it is from the slush mountain-the books they never get to read.
There is a note and it comes from NC. The book is about a Mohegan female and her life and it brings up memories for Jen as is is from the same locale.
Love hearing of the mountains and the editorial world. .gets a bit confusing at times as the book alternates from Jen and her life and the story of the female that lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The font style is different for both.
Jen and her friend Jaime attempt to find out who the author is, and she's pretty sure it's the same as the time shifters author. Problem is he is a loner and doesn't do interviews, etc and Jen isn't 100% sure it's the same guy, Evan Hall.
Her boss wants to know the answers also and sends her back to Looking Glass Gap to find out just who the author is ...
She does, in town, get to talk to one of Evan Hall's relatives and when she returns to the cabin she finds a few more of the chapters of the book, the story keepers. that woman she has plans to meet with in hopes to find out if Evan is the author...
She also gets to reconnect with her family and realizes how backward their lifestyle is and she's glad she was able to get away. The groups come together to help find a lost child. Love the communion box-so glad there is a 'box' in this book. Quite surprised to find out the true author as the clues get them all searching.
Handful of characters, easy to keep track of and glad to hear of the Appalchia people and ther lifestyle. Detailed descriptions of the sceneery was great! Love the story line. Also includes excerpt from The Sea Keeper's Duaghter, the next new book.
I received this book from bookfun.org via Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
