Corrick really annoyed me in this book. In the first book I was convinced that he was a naturally gentle person who was forced into violence by circumstance, but in this book he was just so aggressive and confrontational all the time, like my dude chill.

I quite enjoyed reading about Rian putting him in his place, so it was disappointing when he turned into an asshole too and Corrick ended up being right about him all along. But I was also relieved that there wasn't actually a legitimate love triangle happening.

I am actually quite excited by the end of this book because Corrick and Lachlan (I know I spelled it wrong I can't remember how she spelled it) being forced to work together and hopefully become buds is something I am excited to see.

I'm quite disappointed by how Tessa felt like a nothing character, her only real trait is that she's the kind, trusting one, but then she ends up being wrong to trust Rian which means that she was just completely useless to anyone the whole book. I hope she gets to do more in the last book.

As a fragile peace continues to weaken between the rebels and the lords of Kandala, Tessa, Prince Corrick, and King Harristan attempt to find the best course of action to save both the peace and their people. But when a stranger arrives from a neighboring country promising a cure for the troubles, they are left with a bigger question… who can they trust? Let’s find out!

Read if you like: YA fantasy, YA romance, friends to enemies to lovers, multiple POV, TENSION, slow burn, ocean voyages, we’re stuck on a boat, Robin Hood types, shady new characters, reluctant villains, and a plucky leading lady.

When we left our trio and friends at the end of Defy the Night there was hope for peace but everything hinged on access to Moonflower, the source of the cure for the mysterious disease sweeping across Kandala. With tensions barely assuaged, it is slowly becoming clear that it will be no easy task getting the rebels and lords on the same side. But pressures shift when a ship arrives from Ostriary, a silent neighboring country. And the captain claims to have a special mission that could change everything. Corrick and Harristan can’t afford to trust anyone blindly, but how can they prove his word is true? All the while, Tessa is worrying that she might be well in over her head and her hard work might have been all for nothing.

I was excited for Defend the Dawn but what this book did was completely exceed my expectations. Defy the Night left me ready for more but this kind of more… perfection. We pick right up where we left off and we are thrown immediately into the story and all the goings on of peace negotiations. There is already so much to work with between the cure, the rebels, and the lords but the appearance of the new character takes the story in a new and exciting direction. Our characters go through so many tension riddled situations that I didn’t want to put the book down. I had to know what would happen. We also get to see some wonderful character growth as we see the royal brothers deal with the personal implications of their severe reputations in contrast to the leaders they want to be. Everything is laid out in a way that makes you worried, excited, and so nervously hopeful that when everything comes to a head you are left clutching the edge of your seat. I cannot wait until book 3 comes out… I must know what will happen to Kandala and our friends.
