Okay, super boring for the first half, but the last quarter? WOW. Really enjoyed the last portion of the book. However, it still doesn’t change the fact that I was so bored initially that I didn’t pick this book up again for 9 months.
This book was way longer than it needed to be and I wish we had more good scenes with Corrick and Tessa.

“Defend the Dawn” was unexpectedly the perfect book for the summer because a good portion of the novel took place on a boat.

And there was so much about this story that I loved. I loved the introduction of the captain and who he wound up being. I loved the fact that Harristan took up his brother’s mantle in his absence by going into the Wilds to help his people. More importantly, though, I loved that Harristan’s perspective was included at all — it added so much to story.

Witnessing what he was going through in Kandala with all of the backstabbing Consuls and rebellion that was brewing, and seeing that in stark contrast with what Tessa and Corrick were going through on the ship and what was being revealed to them, had me on the edge of my seat. It was a brilliant way to tell the story.

Everything clicked and connected in unexpected ways. When Tessa or Corrick would receive a piece of crucial information, such as that the people of Kandala were being poisoned, it would have important consequences and effects for Harristan’s POV because he didn’t have that same information. This constant shift between perspectives made the story go by so quickly.

And this might sound a bit demented, but I’m kind of glad Corrick and Lochlan were together at the end of the book because it will make for an interesting dynamic in the next one!

I loved every second of this novel and can’t wait to pick up the conclusion!
