I was so surprised to finish this one - I turned the page and suddenly it was the acknowledgements and I just sat there for a second, contemplating my life choices. As always, Brigid is brilliant. I felt this one was just a ~smidge~ slow, but such is the way with sequels. Excellent plot twist at the end (I was shouting at the dinner table). I can’t wait to read the next one!!
Prince Corrick is a victim! Once again, you got me with the plot twist.
Edit: AHHHH I LOVE THIS BOOK. this was just as good the second time and I can’t wait for destroy the day!
“I love the man I think you are. But sometimes it takes me a little while to figure out which one is real, and which one is just another face you show other”
Thank you so much to Bloomsbury for an arc!
“I've had to fight to hold Kandala together. I've had to fight to keep my brother safe. And now, if I have to, I'll fight to hold on to you."
I knew that Brigid was going to knock this out of the park and BOY WAS I RIGHT. I recently read defy the night and it was one of the best ya’s that I’ve read. And defend the dawn was so much better. Holy crap.
A lot of things kinda shift in the book that we’re so unexpected. Like corrick and Tessa still struggle and due to new factors, Tessa and corricks relationship gets a strained. But I honestly loved it. A couple quotes from it oh my god. How can corrick slightly mean but have me panting after him. But still somehow so unbelievably sweet and I will forever love him.
I have so much to say about how amazingly well done this book was but I feel like no matter how hard I try it wouldn’t be done right. The twist at the end!?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME. BRIGID. I hate you but so I love you. I almost cried.

BK is such a good author, but I found this to be so boring. I wanted to finish the book but the first 75% of the book is very slow, all the action happens in the last three chapters.
Incredible. Even better than Defy the Night. Just the right amount of action, romance, drama, and adventure. Snappy dialogue. Would love to have the opportunity to re-read this again as if it were the first time.
