this was definitely weaker than the first one...but I'm still invested! i hope the next one is better lol
What?!? How am I supposed to wait for book 3? Thank goodness it's coming out soon!
I have to get this out of the way first. Corrick was done so dirty for a majority of this book.
Tessa constantly comparing Corrick to Rian had me sighing then rolling my eyes then wanting to throw this book across the room.
I really like that this series is told from multiple perspectives, but I honestly just did not look forward to Tessa’s perspective. I understand that this book continued the theme of (mis)trust and secrets and who people really are, but the pace felt slow because it kept dealing with the same uncertainty (mostly from Tessa) over and over again. Would Corrick be able to do things differently (even though he literally was doing things differently)? Could Tessa stop fearing Corrick (who hasn’t ever physically hurt her)? Tessa’s confused feelings towards Corrick weren’t the only example of doubting others, but I feel like it sure took up a lot of time after I feel like at least some of those doubts should have already been settled.
However, Harristan’s chapters were a huge highlight of this book. I loved seeing his side and his plot was interesting.
The last 100 or so pages of this book changed my rating from 3 to 4 stars. It had a lot of what I felt the first 300 or so pages were missing. It was full of action that moved the plot along, and the ending made me excited to read the third book.

the character development yoU GUYSSS
Tessa and Corric have half of my heart and the other half belongs to all the wonderful guards - Thorin, Saeth, Rocco, Killbourne and others ♥
Their loyalty and friendships are everything and it just shows how goof B.Kemmerer is when I, the person who usually forgets thE WHOLE PLOT OF THE BOOK 2 DAYS AFTER FINISHING IT

...managed to remember 4 side character names just because their personalities were amazing. Kemmerer definitely puts her characters before the plot and it shows. It might not have too many mind-blowing plot twists (it has a few though
