More of a 2.5. The "a bit" habit is strong with this one.
More of the same YA tropes from "secret" identities and love rivals to arguements between romantic partners (I really wasn't sure why) and a betrayal that is rather familiar. There's a lot of close quarters traveling for Tessa and Corrick, while we get a new perspective back in Kandala. The setting and situation is interesting, and even with the repetition of "a bit" - sometimes every paragraph - the writing is very readable. I would go for the third book to resolve the three dramatic YA cliffhangers we're left with.

Well. That ending! The beginning was a bit slow for me but once it picked up, the punches just kept coming! Very intriguing turn of events. Cannot wait for the next one!

It’s not really interesting me as much as the first book did. The plot feels slow and the same arguments keep happening with no real progress. It’s beyond me how the backstabbing Allisander guy still has power and is allowed to be obnoxious in front of the king after he literally was exposed for planning to take over, inciting a revolt, and essentially poisoning tons of people including the king.

This book was pretty good. I thought the plot was interesting and the plot twist was unexpected. I do kind of feel like the first two books in this series were a lot of setting the scene for later books, which is like, not necessarily a bad thing but made it feel sort of weirdly incomplete? I have the sense that the three books together will make up enough plot line for one book if that makes sense
