Let's remember that at novella length we're not going to get all the explanations.
So here we are in a world with some promising magic, even if it's very sketchily described (how DO you weave sand?) I liked the magic sand skis though.
Two characters with a background. A setting where being trans is more likely than not, although it fits oddly in a world where some of the societies have rigid gender roles. You can decide for yourself what the Collector - who doesn't want anything to change - represents here.
Indeed, I was puzzled by the introduction near the end of the idea that the Collector is very old. Surely "what will happen when he goes?" becomes really important.
I was fine with the plot, but not sure what we are supposed to take away from this story. Right now I am left with "be careful not to make assumptions about what your aunt wants."
I'll read this author again.
