Undoubtedly a classic. Alex Wheatle’s vivid storytelling brings 1980s Brixton to life and his characters leap off the page and into your consciousness. This book expertly paints a picture of the rumbling tensions within marginalised communities that erupted in uprisings that we should all be familiar with now. I thoroughly enjoyed tracing the geography of Brixton and seeing it through the eyes of Alex Wheatle and his cast of funny, wiley and unforgettable black teenagers. And the ending! All the drama, tension and climactic confrontations of a good TV show.

Enjoyed the beginning of the book but didn’t progress or evolve enough for me.
