I liked this one, what a great way to start the year. With something good!

Isoka is not a nice person, she is a gang enforcer. She kills without remorse, she'd kill her best friend to save her sister, but then Isoka does not have friends. But still, she is great reading about.

I felt like the book did not start off any YAish, when she gets to the ship it gets a bit more YAish, but not that much. Not angsty, silly romance, silly drama, ok sorry YA, but so many have these issues! It feels strong and it stands on its own. No need to label it.

The story is great. She is sent to a creepy ship that comes to collect people of a certain age with powers, and they are given as tribute, cos else bad things happen. And the ship is untouchable, and no one knows anything about it.

What a creepy ship, why does it collect people with power? Who sails it? Why are there creepy things attacking?

We do learn a bit, but not enough. I need answers! I need book 2 at once.

Great book, quite the thrilling ride. Wexler does not disappoint.

I liked it. It was a fun, quick read with interesting characters. I like the magic. Definitely YA with some maze runner-esque features and the epilogue felt a bit rushed but I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Pretty enjoyable! Great world building and fun characters. Really engaging and had me on my toes with what was going to happen next. Excited to start the next one.

Everything about this story was perfect. It had a fast-paced and well-developed plot. The characters were fantastic. I loved the main character. She had powerful and clever but not cocky about it. She did what was needed. I also really enjoyed the slow building romance. It was done really well.

A fun romp! A little slow to start but once I was invested in the romance, there was no stopping me. I had no idea this was sapphic!

I'd highly recommend it to fans of The Maze Runner who wanted less dystopia nonsense and more magic.

Representation : Isoka (mc) is bisexual/mga & sapphic; brown lesbian love interest; deaf & mute sc; f/f side couple.

Ship of Smoke and Steel was not at all what I expected. Since it seems like people like to compare it to other fantasy books, I’d say this is a cross between Mistborn and The Maze Runner. It’s the Maze Runner aspect that really took my by surprise. It has all the action and mystery of that book without the confusing backstory. This was a fun exhilarating read with a badass protagonist you can root for in Isoka.

It took me a while to read this book, but I really enjoyed it. The magic system is fascinating and I really hope we get to learn more about it in future books. I also appreciate that this book did not end with a crazy cliffhanger. I definitely want to know what is going to happen next, but this installment had a nice story arc that feels complete to some extent.
