Tales from the Dark Multiverse is a selection of alternate takes on major DC storylines/events as they happened in the dark multiverse. It also includes reprints of issues from the original stories. I like the concept of what this is doing, but it just reminds me of the problems that the Big Two publishers have had throughout the years; lack of original characters, bloated back stories, rigid adherence to continuity even when it hurts the universe as a whole, lack of real stakes. Some of the stories were better than others. Some of the art was too. All in all, I'm just trudging through the volumes connected to Dark Nights and not finding a lot to love. Like my opinion on some of the others, there are some neat concepts and characters here that fall victim to so many other problems.

When they said 'dark multiverse' I was thinking fun and wild and complicated. Not killing the same characters the same ways for five stories straight. This was so far away from being even remotely interesting alas

Dug the Lois and Ted stories for giving substantial power to underserved characters. Otherwise, just okay what-ifs that all eventually lean towards more gloomy death and no-fun-zones.

I’m a big Elseworlds fan, and in general parallel universe stories are my jam. The stories here range from interesting to trite, with the trite ones basically falling into the “hero turns bad and kills everyone” category, which has been done over and over again.

I like the concept of including the original comic stories that inspired these, but it makes for an unpleasant reading experience because of how thick and heavy it makes the book itself.

Quite a terrifying view of some of the biggest crises and events in DC history that asks 'what if'.

I love how they took classic stories and followed them down a dark(er) rabbit hole—What-if this session had been made instead of that one?

Once you get past the facts that the Tempus Fuginaut is basically Uatu the Watcher wearing an Infinity Gauntlet (or maybe it's an homage?), then this is awesome. All of the melancholy horror of watching the wrong shit happen to heroes (Marvel's What If? At it's best, really) DC manages to capture here as an outgrowth of their Dark Multiverse. Recognizable juncture points (Knightfall, Death of Superman, Judas Contract, Blackest Night, and the OMAC Infinite Crisis stuff) are bolstered here with reprints of the original material, which for the first time, does not feel like tacked on filler! The art and writing on these is bleeding edge, and the tone is dark and sad and terrible, but masterfully done and well-told. Can't really recommend this by itself, but if you do the journey, it'll be the best part.
