Here's a new favourite writer: stories that are emotionally bleak, but not without hope. Danticat (amazing name btw) writes with this very lucid precision that allows the stories to unfold as though you are watching them. She has a light, yet immersive touch. Similar in terms of theme, of loss, of things that lie heavy on each generation, attempts to connect that fail (and succeed). A writer I'll be keeping an eye out for in the future for sure.

A complicated paean to the author’s Haitian heritage full of love and grief.

This helped me think, but I'm not a big fan of short stories

For me, “The Port-au-Prince Marriage Special” is the standout story.

The ones that have stuck in my mind a few weeks after reading are:
the first story and possibly the strongest, where a woman gets scammed by her ex-husband and former best friend, who he left her for. Except they once had a threesome and she still loves them BOTH fr fr....
middle story about a daughter meeting her estranged father for the first time on his deathbed (except he is already dead and they never actually met)
young college student who goes to Haiti and decides to drop out and give her life to charity
mistress of a rich man whose wife and daughter were killed in the Haitian earthquake
