Whew. Everyone warned me this is a brutal book, but I think of myself as strong enough for the unfiltered worst. I was humbled.
Halfway through, I saw that people compared the author to Bolaño, who is just too heartless for me, who feels too close to reveling in violence. I started to despair. Especially because where Bolaño takes everything a little too far, Melchor's writing is painfully real -- with writing like this you can start believing that life is just endless cycles of violence.
And yet. There is just the faintest glimmer of heart here. Finally each battered body shows some small tenderness. The final short chapter was astonishing.
God this book is so sad. Everyone deserved better. It's so sad.

I was entertained and I liked the writing style but boy was the mood somber and dark.

The most grim and dark book I’ve read in a long time. Just when you thought things couldn’t get more depraved, they do! A graphic and unflinching look at the darkest corners of humanity. What made me not just DNF it was the writing and the structure of it. Short but packs the biggest punch.
Fernanda Melchor, tiene mis respetos. Nunca voy a olvidar las emociones que senti cuando estaba leyendo esto.
