This is the kind of book that really takes me on an escape, without keeping me up at night, and without lingering after-effects. It has mild objectification of the female characters, but I've certainly read worse, and Tucker seems generally respectful (acknowledging at one point that despite his attraction to one of the female characters, a relationship founded on the wild experience they're sharing isn't likely to be healthy).

If you've read other books about retired military folks going on dangerous missions to save the world, this one won't have any surprises for you. But I appreciate that the author worked hard to include accurate (and understandable) history, geography, and science in Tucker and Kane's adventures. The writing style and language is easy to digest so the focus can just be on the characters and plot.

I found myself unsure of a few plot points here and there (
how did Anya escape, exactly?
), and unsurprised by the twists (
of course Utkin wasn't the traitor
), but that really didn't take away from the story for me.

Come into this with reasonable expectations, and you'll have a great time.

Other people with soft spots for animals may need to know: does the dog die?
Tucker tells in a flashback that Abel, litter-mate (brother) to Kane, was killed in an ambush while Tucker was in the military. (It was not an easy scene to read; I cried.) Tucker's guilt over not being able to save Abel comes up a few times. But Kane makes it to the end of this story.

I mostly enjoyed this book. It had lots of action without the obligatory, pointless romance. The bits from the dog's POV were unnecessary and felt a bit silly for this type of book though.

Love the dynamic between Tucker Wayne and his war dog, Kane. Having been introduced in one of the Sigma books, this time the duo is contracted to help a Russian scientist escape from a powerful general who wants Russia to rule world again. If you've read James Rollins before, then expect much of the same: action, intrigue, and some bloodshed. A quirky aside: when Tucker is addressed as "Mr. Wayne" my mind immediately thinks Batman is coming to the rescue.

Really enjoyed the relationship between Tucker and his dog. They work well together and seem to know what the other is thinking and anticipates each other's next move. Tucker starts off on what is supposed to be an easy escort job and winds up tangled in a mess and risking his life. Like the bit of history of South Africa. Interesting premise how a primordial organism could survive and wreck havoc and the present day world. Lots of action, suspense, and betrayal.

I like the Sigma Force books a lot, and this was a Tucker and Kane focussed one so: A Dog! It had a great pace and went interesting places, both literally - as in the various locations, and story wise. I liked the supporting cast of characters. Surprised me a few times too. Entertaining and fun read.

I loved this book. The bond between Tucker and his dog, Kane, was amazing to see. And there were a few parts that had us in Kane's point of view. I don't read many books with dogs, but it was such a unique take on how Kane used all his senses to get things done.

There was a lot of action, and I had no problem picturing everything.

I look forward to reading the second one.

Sad thing is, is I almost put down this book. The previous book I had read was so riddled with typos and errors that I saw one in the first chapter of this book and was disgusted enough to stop reading. But I didn't, and it was the only mistake I noticed in the whole thing.

Borrowed it from the library once, and have been looking frantically for it in bookstores so I can own it and read it again. One of my favourite thriller novels ever.
