At this point, it's a given that I will love everything KJ Charles writes, so it's no surprise then that I loved this book. The enemies to lovers trope is brilliantly done here, with neither man compromising himself for the other for the sake of Love. Instead, they come to their own conclusions about their lives and somehow manage to fall for each other without losing a piece of themselves.

Justin has to be one of my favourite characters ever. He is a cheat and a liar and wouldn't deny either label, nor any label you could attach to him, because he sees things as they really are. He is a survivor and make no doubt about it, he will do what he needs to do in order to never be powerless or beholden to anyone ever again.

Nathanial is stubborn and opinionated, with no qualms about calling out people who seek to exploit the weaknesses of others. He has no time for duplicitous cheats, especially a certain self-styled conjuror who clearly has no moral code.

How KJ Charles manages to (convincingly) take these men from two different worlds and allow them fall in love is nothing short of genius (I was going to write "make them fall in love" but let's face it, no one could make these two do anything they didn't want to do!) and I was enthralled by every page that brought me closer to their 'aha' moment - that point when they realized there was no turning back. It was deliciously satisfying in every possible way.

As with all KJ's books, this one is highly, highly recommended.

Charles consistently delivers on this connected trilogy as the search for a missing heir continues.

Here, the story is passed onto Clem’s friend Nathaniel, who is trying to find a lost earl in order to financially help Clem maintain his livelihood. Nathaniel’s search brings him to a charlatan’s door, and though Nathaniel knows he’s a fraud, he can’t help but be repulsed and intrigued at the same time by the enigmatic Justin.

When men of ill repute come looking to get what they perceive as their just reward for finding the missing earl, it puts everyone in danger and reveals an even greater conspiracy behind all the secrets.

This had a nice mix of enemies to lovers, touching on the social divide and its barriers, along with some very explicit covert smexy. I’m still not a huge fan of historicals but as always, Charles makes a strong case for them, and I will concede that she does quite the excellent job - so much so, I’ll forge on ahead and finish this trilogy off!
