Excellent book and a great introduction for the topic and it is relatively short. The author focuses on Shiekh Muhammad Abdu & the secular Ahmed Lutfi Al-Sayyed, but provides a comprehensive background on all the important leaders & intellectuals! It also does a great job of explaining the mess of 3 rulers in Egypt: The Turkish Sultan, the Khedive, and the British occupation. I only wish the citation of translated Arabic quotes was more rigorous; the only annoying thing is that the author uses some really interesting passages from the intellectuals he discusses without citing them! If you REALLY want to enjoy this read it side by side with [a:Abdallah Laroui|943685|Abdallah Laroui|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] 's [b:The Crisis of the Arab Intellectual: Traditionalism or Historicism?|2079522|The Crisis of the Arab Intellectual Traditionalism or Historicism?|Abdallah Laroui|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1372074081s/2079522.jpg|2084796] You are very welcome :)
