“I’m not going to kiss you,” Simon said. “Ever.”

“I’ve never heard anyone say that before,” Jace mused. “It was a unique experience.”

WOW! So a lot of shit went down in this book. A whole lot of parabati shit.

But then The Fiery Trial had to take me on an emotional roller coaster ride that I did not sign up for, like:

Spoiler1. When Jem or freaking Cassandra Clare mentions Will...

2. Clary and Simon realizing their best friend/parabati -ship will be super bad ass and awesome

3. Emma and Julian becoming parabati

but then..

4. Jace.

I honestly have no idea how I even got through this book on my own. I feel like I need a hug and some chocolate.

One word & a super important meaning... PARABATAI. Oh my gosh thank you Cassandra for the chance to get a look at our favorite characters. Did I mention PARABATAI... Yes Parabatai and that's all I can say because I refuse to spoil but holy shit PARABATAI

update - February 2018: I'm finally going through and removing my star ratings from Clare's works. I enjoyed (most of) them at the time, but looking back, I didn't even really like them that much? I've been meaning to do this for years.

original review - 24 March 2016 - 3.5 stars

Everyone raved about this story and how amazing it was. While it is essential to reading TDA, it wasn't the best thing.

SpoilerSimon and Clary are going to be parabati, and that's fantastic! (Seriously, so happy!) The "Trial by Water" thing was weird and I thought the whole thing was good, but I did gather that it was a parabati test very quickly because Simon mentions in an earlier novella about wanting to become parabati with Clary. Also, Jace says something along the lines of "remember the first time you met me" (in the coffee shop in COB when Clary runs out) and I find it incredibly hard to believe that Simon gathered the wrong message from that memory. Simon is so much smarter than that.

This one took me a little bit to understand. Overall I liked it though! I feel like it was a bit of a stretch to get Simon and Clary to be parabatai, buttttt that's fine with me. I'm worried about Juliana and Emma since the uncertainty was super evident - I'm afraid they're going to regret their decision to become parabatai. Also, Maureen was back for a hot second in Simon's hallucination and I love her, so yay for that!

It was interesting to see more familiar faces again this book. And to get reminded of various things concerning parabatai. Not sure how I feel about what feels like a loophole of sorts, but, I’ll wait and see how things play out.
