Nineteen essays about courageous Arab women, and their reporting on the ground. They display strength, power and resilience. An important and eye opening book to read. However, I do have a slight problem with the fact that most of these women did not grow up in their country of origin, and often seem to be “westernised”, like the book was written to please readers from the West and tell a specific narrative.
I think my expectations were too high for this book. Nevertheless, their stories and work is truly important.

Amazingly brave accounts by Arab woman reporters, but almost all of them read like college applications. Did they all answer the same question? "What's it like being an Arab woman reporter?" All the essayists were admirable, their stories fascinating and awful and illuminating, but also in the end it felt like their narratives were snuffed out by the format. It's hard to reach a tight conclusion to a story that includes so much bloodshed and random death and chauvinism, and these essays had to be tied up within a few pages. It's hard to keep a reader captivated when you are forced to summarize your achievements.

It's clear this is going to be a great read, I just wasn't in the mood. I'll come back to it another time

Broad Spectrum of Journalists and Essays
Loved reading through this series of essays from women journalists all over the Middle East. I loved that there was no single view point, or location. The range of topics covered, even within the lense of war and conflict, gave me a greater understanding of the Middle East from a mostly non-western perspective.

10/10 would recommend especially if your image of middle eastern/ arab women is primarily formed by Western media

5 stars. After a couple years of reading an essay here and there, I finally was ready to read this book in its entirety. I devoured each essay and am fascinated by the inspiring and heart-wrenching stories. I truly am in awe of analysis and insights each author provided in their essays. They explored their intersectional relationships to their gender, their profession, their race, their nationality. These essays inspire me to continue thinking about my own relationship to the work I do and my identities. I want to read so many more essays!!
