Incredible insight into the realities of 20th century womanhood across two generations, a mother and a daughter. The hopes they have for each other, the bitternesses—all circling the daughter’s choice to get an abortion and her mother’s desire for her daughter to live a full life outside motherhood.

Who’d be a woman in the 1950’s. Yet surprisingly relevant today. The male characters are all awful but still a good feminist read.

I really didn't expect to like this as much as I did. I caught myself thinking toward the end of this novella that the subtext of the tale - while in no way a mystery per se - somehow receded into the background but paid off in an unexpected way in the final few chapters. This sleight of hand, coupled with the beautiful dialogue between mother and daughter, made this a five-star read for me. A must-read in a post-Roe v. Wade world.

I honestly was not a fan of this book. It just really dragged on in my opinion, and i typically love this genre. I did really like the very ending though, so thumbs up for that.
