John David Anderson continues to have his finger on the pulse of middle schoolers. Malcolm has several angsty things going on. He feels caught in the middle (ha) of his often fighting parents, he is a bit of a nerd and isn't very interested in the sports his father loves, he is trying to navigate a new friendship with Lex and craziest of all, he seems to have an aptitude for miniature golf and his sports oriented father hires a coach and enters him in a mini-golf tournament. The 18 chapters correspond with the 18 holes of the tournament. While time is occasionally confusing in the novel, the humor - both real and middle school smirky - adds a fun dimension. The ending is satisfying though not wrapped up in a neat bow.

One Last Shot by John David Anderson is a moving story of learning to listen to one’s inner voice. Like most of Anderson’s work, this book is a beautiful celebration of friendship and mentoring. It also highlights the impact of parental strife and separation on children as well as the effects pushy, overbearing parents can have on their kids, especially when they disregard their own emotions. I would definitely recommend this one to fans of sports books and those looking for books about divorce and separation.

This is my third John David Anderson book. He's a great middle school author. I think this book falls in the middle as far as enjoyment goes. He creates great characters. I particularly enjoyed Frank, and I liked the world play between Malcolm, the main character, and his friend, Lex. This book would make a great read aloud.

Another great novel by John David Anderson! He always has the perfect balance of humor and poignancy, and this is no exception. Malcolm's lack of both ability and interest in sports has always disappointed his father. When they suddenly discover that Malcolm is very good at miniature golf, it's a real game changer. (Both literally and figuratively.) This was a fun book that addresses some serious family issues as well. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.
