Quick, descriptive, mysterious, and exactly what I've come to expect from this author.

On the Fox Roads is a short story, but is filled with a large amount of vibrancy and atmosphere. Nghi Vo is one of my favorite authors. Her stories always feel unique and magical. I love the queer representation throughout her works. This is just another example of her solid story writing skills. It is a fun, quick read with a cool world and memorable characters. Definitely worth the short amount of time it will take to read.

While this started out with a USian Depression bank robbery, and it felt like it was going to have a lot of quite tired tropes, it very quickly moved away from that. Not least because the bank robbers aren't white, and because we see the story from the viewpoint a young (teen?) Asian-American character who I don't think is named through the story. And then the differences from this world slowly added up, in creepy and disconcerting manners.

It was interesting, and I can see why the story was written the way it was, but I didn't love it. The characters, and character voices, were amazing, the world-building came through fabulously, the plot perfectly fine, but the writing just a bit stiff.
