Discovered Ms. Kostyuchenko after hearing her story about being poisoned in Germany on the NPR podcast, This American Life. Her narrative and storytelling ability made me want to seek out more of her work, especially as in the podcast, it was especially evident and poignant that despite being driven out of her homeland, and being potentially murdered by the Russian security apparatus, she still had a deep passion and love for Russia.

So when I discovered that she had a book called I Love Russia and was filled with articles she had written about her country, to allow others to understand the world's largest country, I was all in.

However, what I found, felt like a bit of disjointed mess. It didn't have any of her passion and feeling, and frankly in parts, felt just so very dry. I'm sure a lot of it was lost in translation (as these things often are), however it just didn't evoke anything of Ms. Kostyuchenko and her intrepid style or belief. The parts that she had written, about her personal insights/experiences that prompted each essay or article were the best part of the book, and became something to look forward to, while drudging through the essays, but the juxtaposition between the two made it hard to enjoy or understand as they weren't connected in any way.

I read about 30% of the book prior to abandonment, but did flick through each chapter to see if I could find something that provided that passion that she so deeply presented in audio, but it all just felt really flat and nothing evoked a need to read the material.

я не думаю, что могу подобрать слова, чтобы описать, что я думаю об этой книге. Елена Костюченко была для подростка-меня не кумиром, но кем-то вроде этого — я восхищалась ей (профессионалкой, талантливой журналисткой, открытой лесбиянкой и активисткой) и хотела вырасти похожей на нее.

эта книга отзывается в моей душе чем-то, чему я не могу подобрать название — я понимаю, почему страна в названии у Костюченко любимая. я понимаю, почему вместо этого слова там звездочки (для меня этому есть два объяснения — 1) иногда нельзя выразиться цензурно и 2) в стране, которая ведет войну и в которой замалчивают слово мир даже в устоявшихся лозунгах, сложно говорить про любовь).

в самом начале книги я не ожидала, что она так зацепит меня, но с 3 главы, когда я начала узнавать свою страну в том, что пишет Костюченко, меня стало затягивать и затягивать. иногда я забываю, насколько потерянной и бессильной я могу себя ощущать из-за происходящего. иногда я забываю, насколько сильно я могу ненавидеть.

в одном из интервью насчет книги Лена Костюченко говорит про любовь (и название книги):

Любовь требует жизни. Любовь требует пристального взгляда на то, что любишь. Чем больше любишь, тем пристальнее смотришь.

я бы хотела вынести из данной книги именно это — не ненависть (которая сейчас ни к чему не приводит), не бессилие (которое может подействовать только отрицательно), а уверенность и силы для того, чтобы не отводить глаза — идти и смотреть.

What an exceptional book, even the title alone has meaning, patriots reading this book will not be happy as it shines a light across all aspects of the dark sides of Russia.

Everyone should read this book.

A stunning, haunting portrait of a country that seems lost and set on self-destruction. The harshness, oppression, and corruption experienced by its people is heartbreaking. Kostyuchenko's writing is incredible, necessary and deeply affecting.
