George RR Martin said this was an inspiration for Game of Thrones and you can certainly see the resemblance. However, this is a watered down shadow of ASOIAF. Imagine if instead of 1,000 pages, A Game of Thrones had only 300 - that is how this book felt. It felt like we just got an overview of characters without really exploring them in depth. There was a lack of urgency for the main plot and often the narrative coasted along without anywhere to go. Most of the sub-plots didn't go anywhere and seemed unnecessary. Perhaps they will be developed in the sequels.

This book was very confusing trying to keep up with all the characters. I found it somewhat interesting since it is historical fiction, but the stories dragged on too much for me. I do not think I will continue on with this series. Glad I didn't buy the first 3 books set on Kindle.
