beautiful writing. short form writers are really amazing to me; the amount of plot and emotion they can pack away into a certain amount of words is incredible. the rhythmic storytelling structure and evocative writing style had my heart a bittersweet, fiercely proud mess.

For such a short read it was very engaging and seemingly had more depth than longer books I've read. I'm also hooked for the other books in the series now.

I want to know more about the clerics and divine in this world. I also hope we get the meet the new empress.

Also I didn't understand at first....until the end when I finally did. As I think we were supposed to. Excellent prose.

This was a really beautifully written novella. The world was sparse yet at the same time felt rich and full, like there is much more to be discovered and explored in future additions. I was very impressed by the ease of world building, especially after reading some particularly dense fantasy novels where I still felt uncertain about the world hundreds of pages in. Very much looking forward to the next in the series.
