Really fun series overall, I’d love to read more books set in this world

something about the ending was unsatisfying to me…

It was too easy after all that?
There wasn’t much sacrifice?
Some loose ends - like ai sentience (I was half expecting peaceful ending with robot bodies or brains grown in jars for the Homians)

Kaaro’s (first) death made me legitimately sad, but I think the ending would’ve been better if he’d still been alive for it.

He was already on extra time, so it felt like a lot less of a sacrifice that he had to make

A good end to the Rosewater Trilogy. While it lacks the mystery of the first book and the character development of the second book it brings the story to a conclusion and touches on some fascinating philosophical themes along the way.

Mayor Jack is handing over the dead of Rosewater to the Homians, allowing them to supplant their consciousnesses in physical forms. The Mayor's wife is on a mission to prove that the reanimates are not truly gone, going up against Rosewater's policy, which was put in place to keep them safe. But it will only last so long, eventually humans will be replaced on Earth unless someone can find an alternative.

Part of this instalment is told in first person from the point of view of Oyin Da, otherwise known as Bicycle Girl. This reveals her back-story and her part to play. I'll admit I wasn't in a great headspace whilst reading this and there's a lot happening, so I'm not sure I absorbed it all. I didn't completely understand what was going on with Bicycle Girl. Was it the xenosphere giving her the ability to time travel or was she not even time travelling?

Kaaro's keeping his head low whilst Aminat works for what's left of the authorities. The Synners are Homians taking things into their own hands, suicide bombers of sorts, speeding up the transfer process by taking more lives. Aminat wants something to be done, a punishment to those who get away with it, given a new body without consequences.

Rosewater, now independent from Nigeria, makes the choice to decriminalise homosexuality and the endgame plays out against their first, yet very small, Pride march. This was a nice touch. However for such an innovative alien invasion, I felt the solution was a bit cliched. Overall I enjoyed the trilogy but I think the other books were stronger in plot and pacing.

My GR friend YouKneeK won't read series unless they are done because she likes reading them straight through to the end. Usually I like to break them up a bit so each individual book feels more fresh but this series needed a straight through read, which I did not do. As a consequence, I was thoroughly lost for the first part of this last installment, until I forced my brain to give up the lost knowledge.

This series was excellent! It had aliens, time travel, robots, body snatching, alien invasion, future tech, cyberspace, mind control and Nigerian politics. It was everything I could have wanted in a sci-fi novel except a space ship or two. I enjoyed every character arc and liked the ending.

Looking forward to what Thompson comes up with next. 4.5 stars, with .5 star because it was a bit chaotic in parts and possibly too much in the story.
