This only took me 7 months to finish... I have a love/hate relationship with this book. I love her writing style and the story itself but it desperately needed an editor to cut out the filler, and apparently this doesn't get any better as the series goes on.

Lord. It took me a lot longer to slog through this than Outlander. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Outlander because I found the time that they spent in France to be really boring. And while I'm a historian by trade, this series/book is so heavy handed in history I'm not terribly well versed in that I found it mildly exhausting to keep up. But damn it, I just love Claire and Jamie too much to not love this book, too. It's like when you watch Titanic for the first time: you know how things end but you pray they don't end like that.

Now that I’ve been trained on the slow pace of the first novel, I knew what I was getting into with this. A change in mode here is a framing narrative. In this one we get a third person perspective at the start, centering on a new character. The protagonist’s daughter is also introduced at the opening, in which we learn Claire has spent the last 20 years in her present day. I like the time travel trope of showing us the ending first and working out how we get there. We do get back to 18th century Scotland and go to France. France was not my favorite, but it gives the characters a chance to rub shoulders with kings and make political moves. This sequel feels more like history disguised as a romance, but it works decently. Of course we end on a cliffhanger, so I might actually find my way to the 3rd installment after a break.
