The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

What to say about this book? It took me about 70 or so pages to get in to it. I didn't like the extra chapters about characters that weren't about the main two. And I thought they were pointless and annoying. But as I got deeper into the book I came to like it. To me shows that no matter what is going on in your life, someone always has something going on in theirs that could be just as horrible. Now I don't believe in the whole love at first sight, save for your children. But I did enjoy this. I lobe how Natasha grew in just one day, but still stayed herself. I love how Daniel stood up for himself and what he truly believed in. Overall at the end I really enjoyed this. I can't wait for Nicola Yoon to write more books. I will definitely be buying them!

On another day in another mood, I probably would have enjoyed this book more. It's not that it was bad, it's just not really my thing. Still, if you're into contemporary romances and books that have deep philosophical meanings (or at least pretend they do), you would probably enjoy this.

Re-read because last time I didn't finish it properly. The 3-star rating stays, though.
I warmed up to this book better than the last read, maybe the love-at-first-sight between two unlikely characters and the continuous change of narrators aren't so bad.
No, they are bad, but I appreciate the thinking about the inner lives of side characters. The police officer who was desperate for human contact, the bus driver who went through divorce, the lawyer caught in an affair. I'm reminded that everyone has their own universe, and it's easy to stereotype a stranger if we are not in theirs.

Observable fact: It is entirely possible to sell me insta-love. Nearly everything Colleen Hoover has written contains insta-love in one way or another and there are plenty of other books I love that contain the trope but in those books, it is sold to me very well. I can even compare this to another favorite book of mine that's a love story that takes place over the course of one day: They Both Die At the End by Adam Silvera. In fact, I was reminded of it on several occasions when listening to this (not to mention the fact that Bahni Turpin was featured as a narrator for both books) but here's the thing: it only made me wish I was reading They Both Die At the End instead because it featured almost all of the same themes (basically just swap this book's protagonists' indecision about what they wanted to do for a living out for the crushing weight of certain death within the next 24 hours), the couple in They Both Die At the End was cuter and I was rooting for them way more, and I just didn't believe Natasha and Daniel were as "meant to be" as the book kept insisting they were.

Another observable fact: I was really disappointed with this after loving Yoon's other book, Everything, Everything earlier this month but I guess them's the bricks. This book wasn't entirely devoid of charm, but it did end up ringing just a bit hollow. I really liked the third person inserts where the narrator would explain the history of something or someone, but again they simply reminded me of Silvera's own third person inserts in They Both Die At the End. These third person inserts were a little more interesting than Silvera's, though, and that's the only edge this book has on the other.

If I had known this was a YA romance I never would have picked it up and I’m so happy I did. I devoured it in 2 days. Despite the heavy topics (racism, deportation, suicide, etc), this book is absolutely airy and delightful. I was beaming and smiling along with Natasha and Daniel.
I experienced my first love when I was about to be deported, and so I know how much that intensifies things.
“Meant to be doesn’t have to mean forever.”
