Not among Weber’s best, but enjoyable enough.
All in all the concept of this novel is a fun one, but it never reaches the peak set by Weber’s best writing. Still, if you are in for shorter novel by a writer who mainly writes tomes, it is good enough.

I'm getting better at practicing what I preach to my wife. If it isn't your thing, there is too much good stuff out there to suffer through something you don't like. This is it for me. I listened for 4 hours more than I should have. Ugh.

This started off a solid 4* and when I discovered the premise behind it, the potential rose to nigh on 5*
However once the halfway mark is reached and Colin has joined some other people (to remain spoiler-free), it devolves into huge sections of exposition delivered by various characters, spattered with tiny parts of action and a smattering of character development. Even when you are anticipating action, there is just speech after speech - WE DON'T CARE!
Stop telling us what it's all about, and show it. I get the feeling this book was way too ambitious for the length the author perceived it to be, and it's just a lot quicker to tell rather than show. I was excited in the first fifty pages, and it was all downhill from there. I wish this book was as good as it had the promise to be.

This was a fun read, with a fascinating premise. The moon's an ancient space ship? Cool!
I've been a big fan of Weber's military space novels for a while now, and this one doesn't disappoint. It's from the early stages of Weber's career, and every once in a while you can see ideas and scenes that get developed more fully and smoothly in his later novels.
The book was very hard to put down at the end, which is probably a good sign.
