Some serious issues are covered here, which is Jodi Picoult's m.o. I have a greater awareness of trans issues now, which has given me food for thought. There were holes in the storyline, not major but there - perhaps as a result of collaboration, and it did become difficult to follow with the jumping back and forth in the timeline sometimes. I did however get the 'twist' at about page 160 from memory. Not bad overall.

(2.5?) I love Jodi Picoult. I have read almost every book she has written and I have loved every one, but I hate to say that this book has ended that streak. It just wasn't as good as her others. Maybe I'll try to reread it in the future to see if my thoughts change, but I don't know. I still look forward to whatever she writes next. She's still one of my favorites.

This book was beautifully written. It describes love, both romantic and among family, in one of the most authentic ways I've ever read. The details about bee keeping help to break the tension when the reader most needs it. This would be a 5 star read for me, except that it is deeply intense, in a way that stuck with me and actually made me profoundly sad for several days after reading. It's incredibly difficult to read details about the honestly and beauty of Asher and Lily's connection while already knowing the tragedy of their relationship's ending.

What starts out as a generic murder mystery turns into a thought-provoking novel about how your past experiences frame your current thoughts and predispositions.

Tragic and beautiful and fierce and heartbreaking. Rooting for Asher the whole way. The time sequences were a little tricky to follow. But I can’t stop thinking about the story.

This was a heavy read. I need some time to digest, as it touched on a lot of hot topic, real life issues.
