Dear my future kids,

Mum is likely to read you this kind of gore fairy tales because to be completely honest with you, fairy tales aren't as sweet as what disney showed you. I know, sweethearts, beautiful lies, truth hurts.

Yours truly,
Mum.

I'm trying to read at least one fairy tale per day. There are 120 in this collection, so I should be reading this one for a while. :)

Hmmm, as a child I loved these but as an adult I found them to be highly repetitive and predictable. It was interesting though to read the original stories Disney chose to create movies from. My favourite tale was probably the Lady and the Lion (is Beauty and the Beast loosely based on this..?)
They weren't as dark as I remember them though, and Hansel and Gretel was so different to the common version!

This book is absolutely fantastic! The translation is great, Maria Tatar always is great, and the collection of illustrations and annotations throughout are wonderful. I especially love the introduction by A.S. Byatt, the biographical essay of the Grimm Brothers, and the inclusion of the original prefaces written by Wilhelm Grimm in the first and second editions of the tales.

There are better translations. I enjoy Maria Tatar a lot more and I think her translation is closer to what the Grimms intended. There are several different editions translated by Tatar, that Annotated Grimm's Brothers is the best.

The Lucy and Walter Crane edition is just ok. The illustrations are beautiful, however.

Wasn’t anything to spectacular in my opinion. I’m glad I borrowed it from a friend instead of purchasing it myself. At least now I can say I’ve read it.

I read this for an online class I am taking. While I knew many of the stories I found reading them all together they became very repetitive. I also struggled with the problematic view of women especially around issues of consent. These tales have such great influence on us today there flaws seemed to be magnified.
