So as many of you may know, I consider Larry Brown to be one of the greatest American (definitely Southern) writers since Faulkner and O'Connor. Sadly he died in in 2004, but had many more books in him. I had considered doing some kind of biography of him as my masters thesis, so over the Christmas break I did a check to see if this had already been done and came across this book. I was hoping that it would be terrible, full of massive holes that I could exploit, but no. This is a well researched and well written biography. The biographer knew Brown and managed to get access and help in writing this from Brown's family, editor, publisher and friends. It is both scholarly but written in a manner that is easy to digest and gripping. Brown had a most interesting life, much of which came out one way or another in his writing. For anyone interested in Larry's life this book is a must read.

At times the initials and various other clarifications captured, like (LB to SR) and the like, would throw off the flow while reading this biography, but overall, I loved it.

It's a crying shame he's gone.
