I loved this book; it reminded me of my grandfather’s dry goods store, a Jew store, in Merriam, KS in the 1950s. He and his wife were the only Jews in town, his children having moved to bigger cities. The characters are much as I remember when I came to visit him and my grandmother, although we lived in the Midwest, not in the South. The father in the memoir was a salesman, a risk-taker, neither religious nor prejudiced; the mother, missing family, was more traditionally Jewish, concerned that her son have a Bar Mitzvah, and that her daughters marry Jews. Well written memoir.
