“Under that star lies my ancient country. I have lived there for eighteen years. Yet I will never see her again.”

Pretty interesting little collection of stories, taking place in 1920s China and Japan. I sort of expected the stories to have a revolutionary bent, and while it was a minor theme, it also wasn't. Most of the stories dealt with male desire to some degree, desire that was directed towards younger women, and I wasn't super compelled. Though I did rather like the perversity of "Past", and the descriptions of depression and the longing for one's homeland in "Sinking" were really haunting and beautiful. I also liked that it touched on the experience of what it's like to be a Chinese person living in Japan in the 1920s; the frustration and helplessness.

3.5 stars, a good read.
