There's a clear step up in quality here from the first book to the degree where I'd recommend starting here and treating the first book like a b-sides collection. It starts the plot proper for the series, shifts the storytelling from short stories to full blown novels, and begins the worldbuilding. It's a lot of fun, but still very obviously written for a target audience. This series has definitely become a hit in my house.

Not the best in the series, but still a very fun book to read with my six year old son.
