I had to read the book twice for school and found it annoying each time. Then we had to watch the movie. It's "charming." The book is annoying and I don't like the characters. This doesn't effect the story, but I don't like how the author came up with the idea after seeing a kid with a deformed face at a store. Idk, this book is too beta for sigma like me I guess.

I don't give out many 5-star reviews, and when I do it means the book has received my highest recommendation. "Wonder" is just such a book. This is the kind of book that I will talk up to my students and encourage them to read because I know they'll love it, too.

Usually I don't enjoy books that are told from the perspectives of different characters all that much, but it's a perfect choice here. It really adds to the story to hear not just from Auggie but also his sister Via, his friends Jack Will and Summer, and Via's friend Miranda and her boyfriend Justin. It made the book better.

My favorite line in the book (courtesy of Justin) really encompasses how reading it made me feel: "if it really was all random, the universe wouldn't abandon us completely. and the universe doesn't. it takes care of it's most fragile creations in ways we can't see. like with parents who adore you blindly. and a big sister who feels guilty for being human over you. and a little gravelly-voiced kid whose friends have left him over you. and even a pink-haired girl who carries your picture in her wallet. maybe it is a lottery, but the universe makes it all even out in the end. the universe takes care of all its birds."

Do read this book. You will be so glad you did.

The reason I chose to read this book was due to the clamor it brought but unfortunately, it was not good enough as it seems but it was nice after all to read it.

Kinda love-hate relationship with this book. The story itself is sweet, characters feel alive and authentic, but I hate the shift in the narrator. The constant shift. It helped you to see the picture from different perspectives but at the same time, it feels like reading a fanfiction with POVs.
But for elementary students, it is a good read.

I've heard so many great things about this book, I just had to read it. August is ten years old and is just about to start middle school. But he is not your average ten year old boy. It is actually his first year in school, because he got homeschooled by his mom. Until now. But there is something else about August that is not average: his face. His eyes are too far down, his mouth can't really smile and he doesn't have ears. August hates his face and how everywhere he goes, he attracts attention. Kids are scared of him and often adults are too. It's understandable that he doesn't want to go to school, but with some friends, everything is easier, right?

The book tells the story of Augusts first year at school and all his ups and downs. It is a book about friendship and courage and shows how kindness can grow (as Mr. Tushman would say). I love the structure of this book, because each chapter is just a few pages long, which makes it easy to keep track of all the topics. I also loved how the story wasn't just told by August, but by many of the other characters too. That way you get each perspective of the story and you can really get to know the characters in Augusts life.
This is a wonderful book and I can recommend it to everybody, who wants to read about the wonder of life ;)

And now I'm going to watch the movie!

2013 is starting to really be the year of great reads. Wonder was recommended by a blog by NRG Joan of Dark. Since I was hemming and hawing about what to read next, I just checked my library for all the books she recommended and Wonder popped up as an e-book.

What a wonderful book! I wish I did have the time to sit and read it in one sitting but it didn't work out that way. I actually loved this so much that I chose not to go to Half Price Books during a lunch with a friend, just so I could keep reading this. So I sat in my car, eating Indian food from a food truck and read. Perfect. Lunch.

Wonder is about a family, The Pullmans, but it revolves around the little boy, August. He was born with severe facial deformities and was homeschooled his entire life. This book covers his first year in a mainstream school as a fifth-grader. Despite the many, many surgeries he has had, he is still very much different from everyone else.

The book has sections for the kids. August is first, then we hear from his older sister, Olivia, his friends, her friends, etc. All the kids have a point of view about August and the Pullman family.

Obviously, school is very rough. It's never easy being different from the other kids (oh, this brought back bad memories of school) but August is a champ.

Wonder really did my heart good. I got teary but I was mostly very proud of August and his friends and family. HIGHLY recommend.
