I learned a lot about the Hungarian Jewish experience – from assimilation to relative protection under the Horthy govt, then persecution and rapid deportation/extermination once the Germans invaded.  Very interesting info on the labor service units, which were units of Jewish men attached to Hungarian military units while the country was allied with Germany.  Little better than slave labor, though some traditional military leaders tried to advocate for better treatment.  Aside from the authentic history, which I appreciated, the problem with this book was the overly sappy family drama and love stories.  The whole first half of the book takes place in Paris, setting up the background of the main characters and their star-crossed love.  Pretty cheesy, though I can see why some readers would need this to establish sympathy for the characters when shit hits the fan.

The ww2 vibe is too close to present day. There was something kind of slut shame-y about Klara that finally put me off.
