I understand that it is juvenile fiction, but I was hoping for something more in line with the depth and complexity of Harry Potter. While being disappointed on that front, I did become attached to Katniss' character. I realized I had become attached when after a few days of finishing the book, I missed reading her voice.
The trilogy had some potential to explore the tensions of power, freedom and safety, but fell short. While I am glad this trilogy is being read by many, I don't know how many readers will cognize the inevitable results of central planning, organization over freedom, and the loss of liberty that comes with a move towards "safety", state-control, and "peace".
In the end it was a great dystopian book. Few in that genre have disappointed me so far.

It was and was not what I was expecting. Collins put Katniss in such a lousy position. I just didn't see how she could come to a decision. And when the decision was there...gods...I cried and cried. I know someone had to lose but...I didn't want any of the three of them to have to lose.
As for the story itself, it's so easy to see how such a world could come about and the maneuvering and positioning that goes on is so scarily universal. So, okay maybe not a stupid bomb but a nasty one instead...
