This is another of Carlyle's better books. The hero and heroine are absolutely kick-ass characters.

I really liked these characters. The plot was a bit heavier than I like, as I prefer the story to be more character-driven. Overall, this was a good book with an interesting and endearing hero and heroine.

Hotness and drama in a right mix. I love it. I love Catherine's character especially.

What a delicious, different romance this was! Neither character moved in the center of society, which created a lot of interesting class tensions. Catherine married young and is much more comfortable in the country, running a farm, than waltzing around a ballroom. Max is a former Bow Street Runner, ex River Police, now serving in the Home Office in a more political position.

Max and Catherine are both incredibly stubborn, dedicated people and I enjoyed watching them work out their relationship and share their passions.

My one gripe was that, for such an interesting storyline, it could have been made even more daring. (SPOILER ALERT) Max HAS a title, he just refuses to acknowledge it. Booooooring! It would have been more interesting and created more tension if he had had NO title at all. However, I'm not sure if Carlyle would have been able to publish as a Regency Romance otherwise. Conventions of the genre being what they are ...

Anyways, Max+Catherine=Awesome.

In the first Rutledge book, "Beauty like the Night," Lady Catherine Wodeway was introduced as a girl who married too young in order to escape the household of her father. When her husband died, she was left drifting. Landing in London for the Season, she decides that it might be time for her to have an affair. Every morning, she rides around the park, messing with Max de Rohan's attempt to catch some corrupt cops. Max is part of the newly formed police unit, well below the social strata of Catherine Wodeway. He knows it, but is still strangely drawn to her. When her path keeps crossing with his in the murder of a dissolute society woman, he realizes that he can't avoid what is obviously fate.
