The title makes you question " What is a Dead Cat Tail Assassin", but soon into reading this book you discover what exactly it is. I will say P. Dejli Clark is such a masterful writer. I couldn't put this book down. To think this book is only a little over 220 pages, is crazy. There is so much action, discovery, and story telling.

Eveen is the main character and she apart of a gild of undead assassins Not to be confused with a zombie. (another reason to read the book ) Her gild is contracted by various people to ship(kill) people for various reasons. One day she is given an anonymous contract to ship a person who she has no information about. Usually the assassins are given at least a name but not this time. Eveen is only given a coin, that is suppose to lead her to the target. This target will end up being someone she can't kill. They are connected in a way that seems to be unexplained. With Eveen unable to kill her target, she has now put herself and her gild in danger of all being killed. Eveen and the target will go on a mission to find an away out of all the mess that has anonymously found its way to Even. Oh will Eveen is trying to figure everything out she is being hunted.

This was an action packed book that is nonstop up until the end.

The Dead Cat Tail Assassins are not cats. Nor do they have tails. But they are most assuredly dead.

What an interesting take on an assassin story. I love books with a unique mystery and different beings and especially love anything with undead. This book was imaginative, quick paced and full of action. Our main character, Eveen the Eviscerator is snarky, witty and clever and I love her so much. For such a short novel, this one packs a punch with a well detailed storyline with a satisfying end that will make you wish the book was longer!

P. Djeli Clark has become a favorite for his world building, dry humor, and well developed characters, and The Dead Cat Tail Assassins is no exception. The Dead Cat Tail Assassins follows Eveen the Eviscerator, a member of The Dead Cat Tail Assassins Guild. We follow her as she starts on a new contract when things start to go a bit unusual. The characters are all fun and fleshed out, and you can see Eveen traveling through Tal Abisi through the story. I loved the Assassins, and would gladly read more of their tales should Clark decide to  revisit the world of Tal Abisi.

This was honestly not what I was expecting to get out of this novella- I read the synopsis again after receiving this ARC, and was intrigued (again).

Eveen is an undead assassin- part of an elite group of other undead like her, souls bound to the goddess of assassins and fate sealed. When a new job comes up on the night of the biggest festival in town, Eveen isn’t expecting her past to get dug up, and in the process, her entire life getting turned upside down.

This novella was equally gripping and immersive, to the point where you’re like, “Oh… that was a novella?” I haven’t read any of Clark’s work before, but I have marked Ring Shout and A Master of Djinn as TBRs, and let me just say this: you can tell that Clark cares about his craft, and that he truly does pour effort and love into every sentence he concocts. This world felt incredibly flushed out, even more astounding looking at the page count (224 pages?!?!) and the character dynamics were absolutely amazing! Clark is now definitely on my map. Am I saying that this book is flawless? No. It’s extremely action packed and sometimes tries to do a bit too much in its small frame. It’s not a literary masterpiece. However, I recommend you give it a shot!

That was just a lot of fun 😄

Thank you to NetGalley and Tor Publishing Group for a digital advanced copy of this e-book in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this quick little novella. It was fast paced, a little self aware, and funny! It could be due to recency bias but the book gave me Hazbin Hotel vibes. Mostly in the way the characters act, talk, and react to each other. I also enjoyed reading a Black/POC Fantasy book. Being a cis female white reader, I appreciate expanding my consumption to voices and experiences that are not like my own and challenging my assumed cis/whiteness bias. I am really interested in reading more P. Djeli Clark!

My copy did have some typos and weird sentence structure which may be due to the fact is was an ARC.

Who its for?: fantasy readers, fast-paced action, get out of a reading slump, not so hard to think about

Who is it not for?: People who want more complex/epic fantasy, People who think to hard when they read (that can be me sometimes!), people who don't like a little bit of gore.
